Grupo HAME/REPSA committed to human rights

We promote equity, fair and dignified treatment, and respect and integrity of the individual and his work

It has been 72 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights being agreed upon by the General Assembly of the United Nations that seeks to guarantee inalienable rights to all people, regardless of their sex, race, religion, language, political opinions, or any other status. All human beings have the same value, and we all have a right to a dignified life.

And when we affirm the title of this note, is because without human dignity, we cannot guarantee a sustainable development for the planet we inhabit. That is why Human Rights are promoted by the Sustainable Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals are encouraged by progress on Human Rights issues.

Although it is everyone´s responsibility to fulfill this, it has been sought to strengthen the youth who, through various historical events, has proven capable of bringing about political, economic, and social changes throughout the world. This is how the UN seeks to give participation, empowerment, and exposure to the new generations who, through art, their job positions, their ventures, seek human dignity in all respects. It´s said that “one is never too young to change the world”, so if we want to be consistent with sustainable development, if we want positive impacts and benefits for all, worldwide, it is the youth the main force from which we can leverage to achieve a new and better reality.

At Grupo HAME/REPSA our policies are based on the essence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thus, every person who collaborates around our companies, not only develops professionally, but also improves her quality of life and that of their families. Our goal is that everyone has a dignified life, regardless of the place in Guatemala we inhabit. That we can all receive the essential and thus, develop as human beings.

Grupo HAME/REPSA committed to caring for and preserving the environment

Every year the United Nations addresses a topic to be enhanced and given greater importance within the Sustainable Development strategy. On December 2, 2019, through the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, declares 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health -IYPH-, whose goal is to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development.

Plants constitute 80% of the food we eat and produce 98% of the oxygen we breathe. However, they face constant and growing threat from pests and diseases.

Every year, up to 40% of global food crops is lost due to plant pests and diseases. This causes yearly losses in the agricultural trade of more than 220,000 million US dollars, causes millions of people to suffer from hunger, and severely harms agriculture, main income source for poor rural communities.   Therefore, policies and promotion measures on plant health are fundamental to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

At Grupo HAME / REPSA we are aware of the importance of plant health in agricultural crops, mainly when these are intended for food; we also recognize the importance of plant health in the ecosystems around us, as a key element in strengthening the programs on plant health in oil palm plantations.

In terms of plant health, plans and programs should be aimed at preventing attacks from pests and diseases, assessing general risks for agriculture, the plantation system, and surrounding ecosystems. The main prevention strategy is to have a plan on plant nutrition that reduces plant vulnerability to pest attacks and severity of diseases that insects can transmit to the plant.

Then the integrated pest management -IPM- program should be based on preventing actions, such as monitoring of pests and diseases in the plantation. For this purpose, sampling stations are located within the plantation, and field personnel specialized on identification of pest insects and disease symptoms in palm plants is assigned for samplings. Additionally, palm leaves are checked inside the monitoring station to know their health status.

Through the monitoring of sampling stations effective and accurate decisions can be made, anticipating damage that can be significant for the plantation whether of pest or disease. The timing of decision making is decisive, as you can opt for more environmentally friendly controls like the biological control, which is based on the release of living organisms naturally present in neighboring ecosystems, and which reduce the number of populations of harmful insect, without damaging beneficial insect species present within the plantation and its surroundings.

If pest control with chemical products is required, those products that have low toxicity, with blue or green labels with focused applications (accurate location within the plantation) and not generalized applications to the whole plantation, are always assessed. Use of chemical products for pest and disease control is assessed on a yearly basis, to reduce the quantity of these products applied to the plantation.

Also, in the IPM, ethological control has been included with tramp setting for pest control, in which specific attractant baits for unwanted insects are placed, and regular visits are carried out to review the number of catches and be able to project levels of populations present.

Part of the IPM incorporates agroclimatic practices within the plantation, which consist of several actions like the establishment of nectar plant plots as ecosystem for beneficial insects because they control populations of pest insects. Another action is the reduction of applications of chemical products for weed control, with the aim that the plant cover retains soil moisture but also facilitates the transfer of beneficial insects within the plantation.

At Grupo HAME / REPSA, we are committed to the control of diseases that affect the plantation and can even become risks for neighboring plantations. The main controlled disease is the red ring, that causes plugging in the plant vessel conducts that prevents water and sap flowing, reducing the plant food capacity, and producing short-term death. This disease is monitored since 2010 because of the efforts to control the vector insect transmitting it, and to cure the plants that suffer from it, 2020 is the year with lower incidence of cases of the red ring in REPSA plantations.

There are other diseases that are no-shows in the plantation and that prevention and containment activities in the IPM are being implemented. Presence of the disease known as White scale of the coconut tree (Parlagena bennetti) was identified in Guatemala in 2017. This disease appears in the plant leaves, reducing their photosynthetic capacity because of leaf area loss, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, and the normal development towards flower and fruit production. Currently this disease has been identified in the north-eastern zone of the country, specifically in Izabal. Therefore, containment protocols of this disease have been implemented, preventing visits from both the company´s personnel to plantations in the mentioned territory and from these plantations to those of REPSA. Another control is assessing the fruit received from suppliers of the fresh fruit bunches supply chain to rule out entry of the disease in such way in the operations. Review and inspection of the White scale symptoms in the plantations have been included in the monitoring program, through training of plant health personnel so they are able to identify it.

The SDG 15 “Promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” defines the goal to integrating ecosystem and conservation values in planning, development processes, and has been considered in the environmental commitments of the company included in the Policy of Responsible and Sustainable Production, and operational plans and programs. Plant health in harmony with the ecosystems is a goal we have as a company.

We are HAME, we leave our mark, generating value.

Sustainability and Climate change

The greenhouse effect can be summarized as the climatic conditions of planet Earth to harbor life as we know it. Climatic conditions on Earth arise from the concentration of gases in the atmosphere that facilitate the retention of energy from the sun and is stored in the oceans that function as giant batteries.

Gases that concentrate in the atmosphere are result from the natural activity of living beings on earth, plants, animals, and humans. However, human activities in the last years have increased the quantity of gases emitted to the atmosphere, by the processes required to meet the living needs of the inhabitants. That´s why now you hear the term Climate Change, that shows through the increase of temperature of the planet and more violent natural phenomena like hurricanes, droughts, ice melting, and colder winters.

All the activities developed by humans, both individually and as a society, emit greenhouse gases. Different methodologies have been proposed to calculate these emissions, one of these is reflected in the carbon footprint indicator. This can be calculated per person or even per productive activity as those of companies.

The carbon footprint measures the impact of everyone´s actions on the planet. Yes, this means that all of us, through the daily things we do, generate a carbon footprint.  That´s how the transport we use, the electricity we consume, the amount of water we use, generate an index, which together with the result of all others, gives the global carbon footprint.

Now, when we consider dimensions, it is important to clarify that an individual´s carbon footprint is quite different from that of a company, a product, or a service. That´s why organizations that are committed to the environment have processes to calculate and to know which are their main greenhouse gases emission sources, making an annual record to reduce their carbon footprint; the same thing happens with products and services that are in the market.

A company can have a carbon footprint scope 1, which refers to all emissions for which it is solely responsible; scope 2 which refers to indirect emissions from energy, and scope 3, that are other emissions, also indirectly generated by the operation of external services received.

At Grupo HAME, we are committed to the reduction of the carbon footprint, thus we implement mitigation practices and technologies that contribute to that end in the oil palm cultivation. Since 2017 we are certified ISCC EU, through the company SCS Global Services, that focuses on the reduction of the carbon footprint.

The commitment of Grupo HAME/REPSA begins with caring for the natural resources in the territories of the country where it operates, additionally, it extends to the global agreements made by the United Nations Organization, that make a global effort so that everything that is produced, is based on sustainable environmental practices.

We are a company whose priority is caring for our planet.

We are HAME, we leave our mark, generating value

Sustainability seeks to satisfy current needs, without putting the lives of future generations at risk. Everything we do today must have a positive impact for years to come, making us highly responsible for everything we do today. In 2015, seeking to be an increasingly sustainable world, specific objectives were agreed between all the members of the United Nations Organization; This plan is known as Global Goals, which aim to end poverty, take care of the planet and guarantee peace and prosperity for all, by 2030. In Guatemala, in addition to the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), both The public sector, the private sector and the government are committed to the consolidation of a structure that allows this to be a reality in the country through different programs, resources and executions. At REPSA, corporate social responsibility is an important pillar and sustainability is something that is taken very seriously. To contribute to this, it operates through 5 main themes, which cover all the actions that the company does:

Biodiversity, which translates into bringing vegetation where there is none through reforestation programs that maintain the vegetation at the correct levels for the environment.
Community development, through a close relationship with the communities where we operate, to bring development to the entire population, maintaining a positive relationship between all. Occupational health and safety.
Our production chains maintain rigorous security processes, because we understand that life comes before any other issue. We have certi fi cations that ensure safe processes for our collaborators.
Traceability. All the product we grow and all the processes are traceable, in order to operate with transparency to avoid actions that may be negative.
Responsible use of natural resources, using everything that the environment gives us, without taking it to extremes. For example, in Sayaxché, thanks to the water collected from the rains, it makes the irrigation system much more efficient.

Of all the oil crops, the cultivation of African palm oil is the most efficient in the world because with less land and resources, a greater quantity of oil can be produced compared to other oils. In Guatemala, the agricultural sector has a positive impact on the development of the sectors and communities where it operates. And in the case of the cultivation of African palm oil, the data indicate that the contribution to the country is good:

The palm oil sector generates more than 28,500 direct jobs, resulting in 143,000 indirect bene fi ts.
When we go to millions of dollars, the cultivation of this oil generates more than USD $ 400 million.
African palm oil exports generate more than USD $ 390 million, taking into account that in 2019 93% of production was exported.
The palm sector represents 1.09 of GDP.
The three geographic territories most benefited from this are:

The South West, with San Marcos and Retalhuleu.
The South, with Escuintla.
The North East with Izabal.
The North with Petén.
Behind all these numbers, companies like Repsa execute a concept that is of high importance: sustainability. Each production, each crop, each export is carried out under strict processes that seek to generate a responsible economy, take care of the environment, protect the soil resource, conserve and use water responsibly and positively impact the communities, working together with all of our plans. It is the only way in which the cultivation of African palm can leave a positive legacy to new generations. If you want to know more information, click here.

Fats and oils are very important in human nutrition, as they carry nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and K; antioxidants, essential fatty acids, cholesterol and other important components. In addition to these benefits, the cultivation of African palm oil is one of those that requires the fewest resources, if we compare it to other oils. For example, sunflower oil needs 26 million hectares to grow 15 million tons of oil. While palm oil needs 14 million hectares, to produce 54 million tons. This product is also considered a natural energy source and something very important is that it is free of trans fats, which makes it even healthier. It is recommended that the adult population consume between 20 and 30% of the total dietary energy and it is recommended, if possible, not to exceed 25%. Although they have wanted to associate this product with cardiovascular diseases, there is no scientific evidence that this is so. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends a balanced intake between the consumption of saturated and unsaturated fats. On the other hand, a study showed that by substituting trans fats for palm oil, the amount of good cholesterol increases. That is, it does not decrease the amount of total cholesterol, but it does increase the amount of good cholesterol. At Repsa, we recognize the importance of this product and that is why we grow it being responsible for the environment, generating development for the country and supplying palm oil to different markets around the world. And remember, this is a crop where you get more oil for less land. If you want to know more, click here.

Grupo HAME supports purchase of equipment for medical personnel

Company donates Q. 8 million in hospital and food supplies that it delivered in Petén. In its different working areas, collaborators of Grupo Hame take measures on sanitation protection. Representatives of Grupo Hame delivered donation to the president Alejandro Giammattei Temperature capture to workers is applied, due to the emergency of covid-19 in every working area.

This agribusiness group cares for the health of its employees with prevention actions This agribusiness group dedicated to oil palm and banana cultivation has not hesitated to join the struggle to contain the spread of coronavirus in Guatemalan territory. Through its brands Olmeca and Regia, the company that produces and commercializes oils, vegetable fats and food, knows about the importance that all health professionals in the first line against the pandemic have.

For such reason Grupo Hame, with a trajectory of 68 years of generating job positions and over 25 thousand collaborators currently, donated Q8 million for the purchase of protection equipment so that they can perform their labor in a safer way. Donation includes N95 masks, as well as disposable gloves and robes for medical personnel and nurses in the five temporary hospitals in Guatemala, Petén, Quetzaltenango, Zacapa, and Escuintla.

With this support, health personnel will be better protected, transmission will be avoided when equipped appropriately and they will be able to continue with this laudable labor they carry out since the outbreak occurred in the country.

Besides the amount abovementioned, it also gave 5 thousand bottles of Olmeca oil to the Municipality of Sayaxché, in support of the Coronavirus Prevention, Containment and Response Plan. Also through Repsa, one of the companies that is part of the group, it donated 30 gallons of diesel, 25 gallons of gasoline super, a thousand disposable masks brand 3M N95, and a thousand copies of body temperature bulletin format for the Ministry of Health in the district Nueva Esperanza, Sayaxché, that will benefit more than 56 neighboring communities.

As company, it has implemented for all employees covid-19 prevention protocols, when taking temperature constantly, sanitation of buses that transport personnel, sanitary measures like handwashing and antibacterial gel application, as well as social distancing of one meter and a half between collaborators.
